Our Story

About BRISA & TIERRA

Brisa is Spanish for breeze, and Tierra means earth, soil, or the planet.

On the other side of the world, Panama in Central America is a place with high temperatures all year round.
Every year, during the time that corresponds to winter in Japan, the wind blows and it becomes more comfortable.
The locals call this wind "Brisa".

And then, the coffee harvest begins.

At the foot of the Baru Volcano, where coffee is grown, the Brisa blows both day and night.

At an altitude of over 1,000 meters, it goes without saying that the temperature is lower compared to Panama City and other places.
But the Brisa is very pleasant, and it's not cold enough to need long sleeves at night.

People live surrounded by this gentle wind and the blessings of nature.

In 2019, the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP) created a brand logo for Panama Geisha.

It features four symbols: the sun, wind, mountains (earth), and water.
These are the essential natural elements needed to produce high-quality coffee cherries.

Through coffee production, everyone hopes to live happily ever after.

This is the wish and purpose of each person working on the coffee farms in Panama.

How can we avoid putting undue strain on the natural environment we live in?
Everyone is constantly making efforts and innovations for the present and the future.

This involves meticulous care in every step, from cultivation to harvest and processing, all done by hand.

It is by no means efficient.

For example, the harvest is done entirely by hand-picking.
Skilled harvesters go back and forth to the same tree up to 10 times in a season, picking only the fully ripe cherries.

Additionally, to avoid using large amounts of water during processing, they have developed and utilized their own fermentation techniques.
This not only conserves water but also enhances the aroma and flavor, which many farms are now focusing on.

Some farms are committed to completely natural farming methods.
They incorporate ancient farming techniques that utilize the lunar cycle.
The process is entirely sun-dried (natural method).
Cherries are laid out on bamboo African beds within the farm, and occasionally chickens climb up to peck at insects.

The lives of the people are also important.

Many of the harvesters are indigenous people known as Indígena.
Without their skilled work, coffee production would not be possible.
We must also improve the environment of the communities where these people and various others live and work together.

Everything is for the sake of living happily ever after with the limited natural resources we have.

The result of these efforts is unmistakable "quality".

True "quality" cannot be achieved by sacrificing any part of the process or anyone involved.

In the land blessed with a pleasant breeze and abundant nature,
the "quality" nurtured by the people living there.

When you enjoy coffee, we hope you also enjoy the scenery and stories of these people.

With this message in mind, we named it BRISA & TIERRA.

In 2021, Takashi Yamaguchi founded BRISA & TIERRA as an import trader. The company specializes in importing and wholesaling green coffee beans from Panama, as well as cacao and food products.
From a young age, he was deeply immersed in Latin American culture and music. After graduating from university, he pursued a career in music while living in Okinawa and Barcelona, Spain. In 2003, he joined a major record label, where he built a 15-year career in the music industry's digital transformation.
In 2018, during a trip to Central America, he encountered specialty coffee in Panama. This experience inspired him to carry on his father's legacy in the trade business. Leveraging his knowledge and network in Latin American culture, he launched an import business focused on Panamanian green coffee beans.
In August 2023, he established Brisa & Tierra Japan LLC and became its representative.
