The Relationship Between Panama’s Nature and Coffee

Do you know where Panama is? From Japan, it is on the other side of the world, situated at the junction of North and South America, as well as the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. A well-known feature of this geographical connection is the Panama Canal, allowing ships to pass between these two great bodies of water.
Panama, with its tropical climate, is a natural treasure trove. To the west of Panama, near the border with neighboring Costa Rica, stands the country's highest peak, the Baru Volcano. This region is where cold winds originating from the Rocky Mountains in North America clash with warm air rising from the southern Pacific. This constant interaction creates an abundance of clouds, frequent rainfall, and fine mist, which locals call "Bajareque."

In the highlands at the base of Baru Volcano, microclimates vary dramatically within small areas. Even farms just a few hundred meters apart can experience completely different weather conditions. This microclimate phenomenon provides an ideal environment for cultivating high-quality coffee cherries. Because each farm has unique climate and soil conditions, the coffee cherries grown in each location exhibit distinct characteristics, resulting in a wide variety of specialty coffees.

About Panama’s Coffee Farms

Panama’s coffee farms are concentrated in the Boquete and Volcan regions at the foot of Baru Volcano. The country’s total coffee production is relatively small—only one-tenth that of Costa Rica and just one-hundredth of neighboring Colombia. In the aftermath of the so-called "Coffee Crisis," Panama shifted its focus to specialty coffee production. As a result, most farms are small to medium-sized operations that manage cultivation, harvesting, processing, and distribution all in-house.

Renowned varieties such as Geisha, Pacamara, Catuai, Caturra, and Typica are cultivated here, with farmers constantly experimenting with and refining their processing techniques. They share knowledge and insights with each other, contributing to Panama’s reputation for high-quality coffee. Beyond coffee production, farmers continuously strive to balance their livelihoods with environmental conservation and sustainable development, ensuring that future generations can continue their craft.
Our mission is to share these unique and carefully crafted "works of art"—the result of dedicated farmers and a rich natural environment—with as many people as possible.
